Final Fantasy X (FF 10) Summoner Yuna
Yuna is the main heroine of Final Fantasy X and is a 17 year old summoner in the game. She has a very generous and giving type of personality. Yuna gives off a a natural aura of grace and traditional beauty, and this is reflected in her summoner costume which is based off of a ceremonial Japanese kimono. Final Fantasy X’s character designer Tetsuya Nomura explained that he adorned Yuna’s dress and necklace with images of the hibiscus flower also called “yuna,” and that her name carries the meaning of “night” in Okinawan, establishing a contrast between her and the lead male protagonist of Final Fantasy X, Tidus, whose Japanese name translates to “sun” in Okinawan. This contrast is also represented in-game by items named for the sun and moon that empower Tidus’ and Yuna’s most powerful weapons. The basis for Yuna’s overall design was that of Okinawan kimonos, but because of Yuna’s traditional dances, Nomura gave her outfit something that would flow. For this reason, the specific type of kimono he chose for her was a furisode, a kimono bearing long sleeves. Yuna’s summoner cosplay costume is hard to do with100% accuracy because the overall kimono design is complicated and there’s so many small accessory details to cover. My advice is to not set your goals too high and work on the basic components of the main costume before trying to cover the smaller details. Aside from the various tassels and ribbons, Yuna wears an earring on her right ear, a pendant necklace, and a bracelet on her right wrist. Another minor detail for cosplayers to note is that Yuna has heterochromia, a condition that gives the subject two different colored eyes, though many cosplayers ignore this trait since tainted contacts are tricky to use.
